Quote of the Fortnight: Peter Benchley’s “Jaws”

This week’s Quote of the Fortnight is the opening line from Peter Benchley’s novel Jaws, which was made into the blockbuster film that launched Stephen Spielberg’s career as a director.

The novels’ first line captures the suspense and unnaturalness of the novel’s antagonist, the great white shark that terrorizes the New England town of Amity, aspects perfected onscreen in the film.

“The great fish moved silently through the night water.”
