Every other week, I’ll be posting a literary quote for your enjoyment.
This week’s quote is from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, when Hamlet explains to his “friends” Rosencrantz and Guildenstern why he is fed up with humanity. In this season of commericalized holidays and thanksgiving, we would do well to understand Hamlet’s disillusionment.
Act II Scene ii. Lines 303-312.
“What a piece of work is a man!
How noble in reason! How infinite in faculties!
In form and moving, how express and admirable!
In action how like an angel!
In apprehension how like a god!
The beauty of the world!
The paragon of animals!
And yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust?”
